What to Expect When You Work With a Planned Giving Officer

Chaz Zurcher, Planned Giving Officer, Catholic Foundation of Southern Nebraska

Charitable gifts are personal, and we think the process of giving should feel the same. Our Planned Giving Officers help you create charitable gifts in ways that support your faith, honor your intentions, and serve Catholic ministries across Nebraska.

Getting to Know Your Story

Every planned gift begins with a conversation. Whether you begin by attending a seminar, exploring our resources, or simply reaching out to one of our Planned Giving Officers, our process starts by taking the time to listen and learn what matters most to you.

These conversations focus on the organizations you want to support, when you want your gift to take effect, and which assets make the most sense for your situation. Some donors arrive with a clear plan, others arrive with questions. Both are welcome.

We can come to your home or meet in another comfortable setting to talk through your goals. At these early stages, many donors begin with questions about how gifts of stock, grain, real estate, or required minimum distributions (RMDs) work. We’re always happy to answer your questions, and above all, it’s important for us to understand your goals and walk you through potential best giving opportunities.

Exploring Charitable Giving Options

Our second meeting is when we begin to develop a charitable gift plan, and your Planned Giving Officer brings structure to that conversation. They reflect back what you shared in the first meeting, confirm what matters most to you, and introduce a short list of giving options that fit your intentions.

At this point, donors often come prepared with a list of assets—both cash and non-cash—as well as a clearer idea of their overall goals. For many donors in Nebraska, assets used for charitable gifts might include stock, RMDs from an IRA, life insurance beneficiary designations, real estate, and agricultural gifts like grain or farmland.

Based on your goals and what you want to give, we’ll talk through the different types of charitable gifts that would work best for your charitable intent. That may include a Donor Advised Fund for flexible giving, a Charitable Gift Annuity that can provide income, or an endowment that creates an ongoing revenue stream for charities in perpetuity. There are many ways to give, and we’re always working with you to develop a plan that maximizes your generosity while minimizing your tax burden.

Our role is to help you understand the charitable tools available to you.

Executing the Plan

Once your plan is finalized, we help you carry it out. We make sure your gift is handled with care and purpose—gathered strategically, grown responsibly, and protected faithfully—so it can be distributed exactly how and when you intend. Behind the scenes, the Foundation ensures your gift is received securely, managed responsibly, and directed exactly where you intend.

A few examples include:

  • Helping donors document and thoughtfully allocate assets for beneficiaries as part of a charitable wealth transfer plan.
  • Working closely with trusted financial advisors to coordinate the transfer of stock, mutual funds, or RMDs.
  • Guiding donors through the gifting process and assisting with the liquidation of non-cash assets such as gold, classic cars, real estate, or farm commodities.
  • Distributing the full value of a gift to the donor’s chosen charity or charities immediately, when that reflects the donor’s intent.
  • Using the value of a gift to establish long-term giving solutions—such as a donor-advised fund (DAF), donor-designated fund (DDF), or endowment—to support charitable giving over time.

Your generosity becomes part of a long‑term strategy that strengthens parishes, supports vocations, and sustains ministries across southern Nebraska.

Ongoing Communication

Your relationship with the Foundation doesn’t end once your gift is made. Planned Giving Officers stay in touch, providing periodic updates about your fund or gift. Many donors adjust their charitable plans over time—adding a parish, updating their giving plan, or shifting how they use RMDs or stock gifts. Simply connect with your Planned Giving Officer whenever you need support. We’re here to support you through every season of life.
