Here at The Catholic Foundation, we work hard to find smart and creative opportunities to help you be good stewards of your gifts. One of these ways is through gifting stocks, bonds, and mutual shares. Donating appreciated securities–including stock, bonds, and mutual funds–is an easy and tax-effective way for you to make a charitable gift. This blog will provide an overview of the benefits of these donations.
Giving a stock, bond, or mutual share that you have held for more than twelve months offers a tax savings opportunity. You avoid paying capital gains tax on the increased value and receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift.
Subtracting the tax savings from what you originally paid for the stock, bond, or mutual fund can result in a charitable gift that costs you very little. This is an amazing benefit for securities that have greatly appreciated in value.
Rebalancing Your Portfolio
Donating your securities can also help you in rebalancing your portfolio. Donating these securities allows you to maintain your desired level of risk within your portfolio and avoid being overly exposed to market volatility. Choosing to donate securities is a great way to equalize these risks while also giving to a charitable organization that is meaningful to you.
How Does It Work?
Making a gift of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds is easy to understand. You transfer the appreciated securities you have owned for over twelve months to The Catholic Foundation of Southern Nebraska and receive a tax deduction in return. The Foundation will sell these appreciated securities with no capital gains tax to you, and 100% of the proceeds will go to your favorite charity or charities.
Is It Easy?
